Support disaster survivors by answering hotline calls and completing accurate intake interviews in the Crisis Cleanup system so that participating volunteer organizations can evaluate and (when able) provide muck-out, debris removal, tree work, tarping, and other eligible services.

Large donations of goods and services: The United Way of Skagit County and VOA have stepped up to manage intake, warehousing and distribution of LARGE quantities of in-kind donations of commodities and goods. The United Way will distribute them to other organizations and individuals in need.

Large donations of food: Community Action's Skagit Food Distribution Center’s warehouse and cold storage facility is equipped to receive large donations of food, and to distribute it quickly to 20+ food banks and meal programs in Skagit, San Juan and Island counties, and via senior food box deliveries to 260-300 low-income seniors. The Food Distribution Center is able to accept cases, crates and pallets of food, up to semi-truck loads that require loading docks and forklifts for transfer.

The United Way of Skagit County is seeking volunteers to assist w. distribution of disaster relief and recovery items.

When a large-scale disaster impacts a community, multiple agencies and resources are needed to walk alongside them to provide response and recovery support. As a Community Engagement & Partnerships (CEP) Service Associate you’ll connect with local partners to build capacity, coordinate activities, integrate expertise, and ensure that all disaster-affected communities, including traditionally underserved populations, have access to Red Cross services.

Your volunteer role involves implementing the CEP plan, engaging with organizations, and supporting multi-agency collaborative efforts to promote regional engagement and inclusive partnerships.

Disaster Action Team (DAT) Duty Officers are the behind-the-scenes heroes who coordinate local emergency responses as they unfold. From the comfort of your home, you’ll ensure that people affected by disasters receive the care and support they need by dispatching trained volunteers to the scene.

What You’ll Do:

Monitor incoming disaster alerts and assess response needs

Dispatch Red Cross volunteers to provide immediate assistance

Communicate clearly and calmly with team members and affected individuals

When housing is disrupted in communities due to a large disaster it can be tough for many individuals to secure new long term consistent/reliable housing. The Shelter Resident Transition Service Associate assists shelter residents and disaster victims create long term personal plans to overcome obstacles and transition into a stable housing solution. They play an important role in minimizing disaster caused displacement and aid in long term recovery.

Do you have a Flexible schedule that would allow you to deploy for two weeks to support communities impacted by disasters? The Red Cross is looking to train willing individuals over 18 who want to alleviate human suffering by shortening the time of a disaster caused by displacement. When disasters strike, it takes coordinated efforts of government agencies working alongside nonprofit organizations to quickly respond and help chart the path forward. Volunteers serving as Government Operations Service Associates serve as direct contact with government partners, often in an Emergency Operations Center or other coordination center, during a Disaster Relief Operation to ensure that Red Cross actions are aligned with the government.

The purpose of this position is to provide Disaster Mental Health services to people impacted by disasters and Red Cross workers during preparedness, response, and recovery.

Requirements: Hold at minimum a Master’s Degree in one of the mental health professions listed below;

Any U.S. state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, or psychiatrist (any level license/registration, including non-clinical licenses such as Licensed Masters Social Worker or LMSW).

Disaster Health Services Responders provide disaster health care by meeting the disaster related health needs of clients and providing support to other volunteers.

Support to the DAT response, shelter operations, emergency aid stations, outreach activities, and casework and recovery planning during a disaster relief operation .

Time Commitment:

Minimum 8-hours per month

Requirements:

Disaster Action Teams provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing.

Distribution set-up starts two hours before distribution; these volunteers help stock the fridge, freezer, and shelves with food. This role includes standing, walking, and lifting 20-50 lbs.

Distribution check-in starts at least 15 minutes before distribution; these volunteers are given the necessary tools and training required to complete the role before starting. Helping Hands appreciates check-in volunteers who are able to stay the entire distribution and can commit to the role weekly, however we can be flexible and appreciate any help volunteers are willing to provide! This role can be seated or standing, really up to the volunteer. 

Distribution support starts at least 15 minutes before distribution; these volunteers regulate check-in lines, available carts for participants, and re-stocking empty shelves. Help participants carry food to their vehicles when needed, and answer questions when asked. This role can be seated or standing.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers are welcome to volunteer for as long as they’d like between the hours listed above.

The Street Outreach Program team walks alongside people, building trust and relationships until they are ready to opt into recovery programs and housing. They are collecting the following items to be distributed:

Non-perishable high protein soups, protein bars, snack bags

Bottled water and Gatorade

Waterproof small tarps and tents

Blankets and sleeping bags

Waterproof or cold weather men's shoes, jackets, hooded sweatshirts

Men's jeans and t-shirts, warm gloves, beanie style hats, scarves and socks, hand warmers

Hygiene products and underwear

Medical supplies and Ziplock bags

The Street Medicine Partnership is an innovative program that connects Skagit Regional resident physicians and a Street Medicine Partnership physician with Community Action clients who do not have homes. Services provided include wound care, medication management, referrals to specialists, and most importantly, building trust and relationships with our Street Outreach Team, who walk alongside people until they are ready to opt into recovery programs and housing. The program gives out approximately 40 first aid kits per month, and is looking for groups or individuals interested in collecting items and putting together first aid kits.
