We're seeking hardy hands to help re-open wildlife corridors by removing some old fencing from the back edge of our property. If you arrive early, you might be lucky enough to spot resident elk hanging out in the main field. After the work party we will then use some holly collected from the site to make holiday wreaths! Materials, hot chocolate, and snacks will be provided. This will last another 1 hour after the work party and is optional.
Hurn Field provides foraging habitat for a variety of insect eating animals such as swallows, swifts, flycatchers, and several species of bats. Rodents and small birds living in the open field feed on insects and attract birds of prey such as northern harriers, owls, hawks, and eagles. House Slough, which is also on this property, is accessible to fish from the Skagit River and provides rearing habitat for juvenile Coho salmon and trout. The slough also currently features several beaver dams and lodges.
To bring: Your favorite leather work gloves (The Trust will provide extras for those who forget or don't own any!), sturdy boots, long pants and long sleeves, a water bottle and/or a reusable cup for refreshments, and lunch to enjoy on the property. If you have any wire snips or bull cutters that you don't mind bringing with you that would also be helpful. Please dress for the weather.
Directions: Take Highway 20 east to the scenic pullout (about 3 miles west of Concrete).
